In October 2019, 1.4M accounts from the cryptocurrency wallet service GateHub were posted to a popular hacking forum. What was exposed

  • Email addresses: The email address you used to register or log in. It is the most common field in breaches because it doubles as your username on most sites.
  • Encrypted keys: Secret keys stored in encrypted form, such as cryptocurrency wallet keystore files, encrypted password manager vaults, SSH or PGP private keys and backup encryption keys, each protected by a passphrase or master password.
  • Mnemonic phrases: The list of 12 or 24 words, also called a seed or recovery phrase, that recreates a cryptocurrency wallet on any device. It leaks when people keep it in notes apps, cloud documents, email drafts or a wallet service that stored a copy.
  • Passwords: The secret you use to sign in, stored by the breached service either in plain text, in a scrambled form called a hash, or encrypted. How it was stored decides how quickly it can be recovered.
