Panda Dome review: a light antivirus with a tier puzzle and lab test concerns

Tool reviews. Updated 2026-09-13. About 4 minutes to read.

Check Panda's current lab results before buying; on Windows, free Microsoft Defender scored higher in 2026 testing.

Panda Dome is a consumer antivirus suite from Panda Security, which has been owned by the US network security company WatchGuard Technologies since 2020. It comes in four paid tiers and a free version, runs from the cloud and is light on system resources.

It is based on Panda's published plan features, AV-Comparatives lab results and how the VPN limit works. The short version: in 2026 testing, Panda lagged behind free Microsoft Defender.

The four paid tiers and what each adds

  • Essential: antivirus and antispyware, firewall and Wi-Fi protection, anti-phishing, a gaming mode, a Dark Web Scanner that alerts on leaked email addresses, and a VPN capped at 150 MB a day.
  • Advanced: everything in Essential plus anti-ransomware and parental controls.
  • Complete: adds a password manager, PC clean-up, and file encryption with secure deletion.
  • Premium: adds an unlimited VPN with servers in more than 60 countries, automatic patching of your operating system and apps, Dark Web Monitor for new breaches, and 24/7 premium support.
  • Panda Free: basic protection, with the same 150 MB daily VPN cap and no choice of server location.

Lab results: the weak spot in 2026

In AV-Comparatives' Real-World Protection Test for February to May 2026, Panda blocked 386 of 400 live threats, a 96.5 percent protection rate. It also wrongly blocked 27 legitimate sites or files, against a test average of 8, and was downgraded to a lower award because of those false alarms.

For comparison, free Microsoft Defender blocked 396 of the same 400 threats with no false alarms, and Norton blocked 397 with 5. Lab scores change every test round, so check the latest AV-Comparatives and AV-TEST results before you buy.

A false alarm is not harmless. When security software wrongly blocks real sites and files, people learn to click past warnings.

The VPN catch

Every tier below Premium includes a VPN limited to 150 MB of traffic a day. That covers checking email and banking on public Wi-Fi. It runs out in minutes of video streaming. Only Premium removes the limit and lets you choose from servers in more than 60 countries.

Keep the VPN in perspective either way. It encrypts traffic on untrusted networks, which is useful in cafes and airports. It does not stop phishing, breaches or reused passwords, so it should not be the main reason you pick a security suite.

What Panda Dome does not do

  • It has no identity theft restoration, credit monitoring or reimbursement on any tier.
  • The Dark Web Scanner checks leaked email addresses. It cannot remove data and does not watch ID numbers.
  • It does not remove your details from data brokers or people-search sites.
  • On iPhone it cannot scan other apps, because iOS does not allow it.

Check the real price before you pay

  1. Open Panda's plan page for your country. Prices are shown in local currency with large introductory discounts.
  2. Choose the device count you actually need: 1, 3, 5, 10 or unlimited.
  3. Look for the renewal price, not only the discounted first-year figure.
  4. After purchase, check your account for automatic renewal and switch it off if you want to decide later.
  5. Set a reminder a month before the term ends to compare the renewal with alternatives.

Panda Dome against Norton 360 and Microsoft Defender

Against Microsoft Defender, Panda's paid tiers add a VPN, parental controls, a password manager and patching. In the 2026 test above, they did not add better malware protection. Against Norton 360, Panda is lighter and often cheaper up front, but Norton scored higher and offers identity add-ons in the US.

If you already use a free password manager and do not need a VPN, the paid Panda tiers add little that free tools do not cover.

Who should buy Panda Dome, and who should not

  • Consider Premium if you want an unlimited VPN, automatic app patching and antivirus in one bill, and you have checked that the latest lab results have improved.
  • Consider it for an older, low-powered PC where a light cloud-based scanner helps.
  • Skip it if malware protection is your main reason for paying. Defender scored higher in 2026 testing for free.
  • Skip it if you want identity theft protection. Panda does not offer it.
