LifeLock review: what the plans cover, and what they cannot prevent
Tool reviews. Updated 2026-09-13. About 4 minutes to read.
Freeze your credit for free first; buy LifeLock only if you want restoration specialists and reimbursement on top.
LifeLock is an identity theft protection service from Gen Digital, the company that also owns Norton. It watches for your personal details being misused, alerts you, helps you recover and reimburses some losses. It does not stop identity theft from happening, and a free credit freeze does more to prevent new-account fraud than any monitoring plan.

What LifeLock does
Identity alerts when your details appear in applications, breaches or dark web data it monitors.
Credit monitoring with one or more of the US credit bureaus, depending on the plan.
Alerts on activity in linked bank, credit and investment accounts.
US-based identity restoration specialists who help you fix accounts after misuse.
Reimbursement for stolen funds and some recovery costs, up to plan limits.
Automatic data broker removal, new in 2026, which scans large broker sites and submits opt-out requests every 90 days.
What LifeLock does not do
It does not place a federal credit freeze for you. Its Credit and Payday Loan Lock is a product feature, and LifeLock's own footnote says it cannot prevent all unauthorized account openings.
It does not stop phishing, malware or a scam call. Antivirus and your own caution do that.
It does not publish how many data broker sites its removal covers, only that it targets the biggest ones.
It cannot remove breach data or dark web copies.
It is built for US residents, and its scam reimbursement excludes New York residents.
LifeLock plans and prices in 2026
LifeLock Core: 124.99 US dollars a year or 12.49 dollars a month. Two-bureau credit monitoring and up to 25,000 dollars for stolen funds within a 1.05 million dollar total package.
LifeLock Advanced: 199.99 dollars a year or 19.99 dollars a month. Three-bureau credit monitoring, up to 100,000 dollars for stolen funds, and up to 5,000 dollars in scam reimbursement.
LifeLock Total: 349.99 dollars a year or 34.99 dollars a month. Three-bureau monitoring, up to 1 million dollars for stolen funds, up to 10,000 dollars in scam reimbursement, plus home title and phone takeover monitoring.
Family versions cover two adults, or two adults and children, at higher prices.
Norton 360 with LifeLock bundles add device security. The Select bundle was 99.99 dollars for the first year, renewing at 159.99 dollars.
Prices change, and LifeLock says renewals can be charged up to 35 days before your term ends. Check the current price and renewal terms on LifeLock's site, and diarise the renewal date.
The Million Dollar Protection Package, read carefully
The headline figure adds together several separate limits: stolen funds reimbursement, personal expense compensation, and costs for lawyers and experts. The number that matters for money taken from your accounts is the stolen funds limit, which is 25,000 dollars on Core.
The benefits are insurance, issued under a master policy by HSB Specialty Insurance Company according to LifeLock's footnotes, and they come with conditions and exclusions. Read the summary of benefits before you rely on any figure. LifeLock also offers a 60-day money-back window on annual plans.
LifeLock against the free do-it-yourself stack
That stack covers most of what the alerts do. What it cannot give you is a specialist who makes the calls for you and an insurance payout if money is stolen. That is what you are paying for.
Freeze your credit at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. It is free and blocks most new-account fraud.
Pull your free weekly credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com when you want to check for surprises.
Turn on bank and card transaction alerts.
Subscribe your email addresses to Have I Been Pwned notifications.
Opt out of the big people-search sites every 90 days with the free opt-out tool.
The 2015 FTC settlement
In December 2015 LifeLock agreed to pay 100 million dollars to settle FTC charges that it violated a 2010 order by failing to secure customer data properly and making deceptive advertising claims. The company has changed ownership since, but it is worth knowing when you read its marketing.
Who should buy LifeLock, and who should not
Consider it if your Social Security number was exposed and you want professional help on standby.
Consider it for an older relative who would struggle to handle disputes and paperwork alone.
Skip it if you are comfortable freezing your credit and making a few phone calls yourself.
Skip it if you live outside the US, where its credit monitoring does not apply.
Skip it if your main worry is people-search listings. A dedicated removal service or free opt-outs cover more sites with more transparency.
Frequently asked questions
How much does LifeLock cost after the first year?
LifeLock's standalone annual plans listed the same renewal price as the first-year price when we checked: 124.99 dollars for Core, 199.99 for Advanced and 349.99 for Total. Norton 360 with LifeLock bundles renew higher. Prices change, so check before renewal.
Does LifeLock include Norton antivirus?
Standalone LifeLock plans do not. The Norton 360 with LifeLock bundles include both device security and identity protection.
Can LifeLock stop someone from using my Social Security number?
No. It can alert you when it detects misuse and help you recover. A credit freeze at all three bureaus is what stops most new credit accounts being opened with your number.
Is LifeLock better than a credit freeze?
They do different jobs. A freeze prevents new credit applications and is free. LifeLock monitors, alerts and helps with recovery. If you buy LifeLock, still place the freeze.
How do I cancel LifeLock?
Sign in to your account and turn off automatic renewal in the subscription settings, or contact LifeLock Member Services. Annual plans have a 60-day money-back window.
