What happened

In October 2020, the Finnish psychotherapy service Vastaamo was the subject of a ransomware attack targeting first the company itself, followed by their patients directly. The original security incident dates back to a period between late 2018 and early 2019 and exposed data including 30k unique email addresses, names, social security numbers and notes on individuals' psychotherapy sessions. This breach has been flagged as "sensitive" and is only searchable by owners of the email addresses and domains exposed in the incident.

What was exposed

  • Email addresses: The email address you used to register or log in. It is the most common field in breaches because it doubles as your username on most sites.
  • Names: Your first name, surname and sometimes middle name or initials, as you gave them when you signed up. It appears in almost every breach because nearly every account asks for it.
  • Personal health data: Information about your physical or mental health: diagnoses, medications, test results, conditions, fitness and cycle tracking, therapy notes and insurance claims, held by clinics, apps, insurers and wellness services.
  • Social security numbers: The nine digit number the US Social Security Administration issues for work, tax and benefits, which lenders, employers, insurers and health providers use as the main key to your identity.
