What happened

In February 2021, a series of "free" VPN services were breached including SuperVPN and GeckoVPN, exposing over 20M records. The data appeared together in a single file with a small number of records also included from FlashVPN, suggesting that all three brands may share the same platform. Impacted data also included email addresses, the country logged in from and the date and time each login occurred alongside device information including the make and model, IMSI number and serial number.

What was exposed

  • Device information: Technical details an app or website recorded about your device: make and model, operating system version, screen size, language, carrier, and sometimes the device name or advertising ID.
  • Device serial numbers: The unique manufacturer number assigned to a phone, laptop, router, smart home device or appliance, recorded when you register a product, claim a warranty or enrol it in a device management service.
  • Email addresses: The email address you used to register or log in. It is the most common field in breaches because it doubles as your username on most sites.
  • Geographic locations: A general location recorded on your account, such as a country, state, city, postcode or region, either typed in by you or estimated from your IP address.
  • IMSI numbers: The International Mobile Subscriber Identity, a unique number stored on your SIM or eSIM that identifies your subscription to the mobile network. It is different from your phone number and from the handset's IMEI.
  • Login histories: Records of each sign-in to an account: date and time, IP address, approximate location, device and browser, and sometimes whether the attempt succeeded.
